My name is Mark Barlow (AKA Charlie) and I've been amusing myself in the music business for over 35 years. My formative school years were spent listening to an eclectic range of music ranging from Genesis, Pink Floyd and Yes through to Kraftwerk via Punk, New Wave and countless other genres that caught my ear. For a while, I pursued a career in music performance (keyboards) but my passion was always for 'recorded' sound. That passion lead us to set up 'West Orange Recording Studio' in 1989. It was a traditional 16 track analogue studio with the U.S.P. that it offered digital editing and mastering; quite a boon back in the late 80s! We worked with numerous local artists/bands/performers, some of whom went onto national and international success eg. Cornershop (Brimful of Asha) and Ian Kirkham (Simply Red).

During my time at West Orange I was 'head-hunted' by a local FE college to deliver some of the technical units on their BTEC courses. I spent a very happy 20+ years helping students with all aspects of their music courses, both as a tutor, a support tutor and a technician.

In 2018, cultural and funding changes caused the college to cancel its music provision. I now find myself in a position to offer my years of musical, technical and educational experience to those looking to 'fast-track' their careers in the music industry. Here are a few of the areas I'm confident I can help you with...

  • Digital Audio, MIDI and DAWs

  • Analogue recording and techniques

  • Studio wiring and maintenance

  • Microphone types, uses and techniques

  • Music composition, production and arrangement

  • Room acoustics and treatment
